Camping can be fun, but there are dangers outside that aren’t present in the home so you might want to be aware of some camping safety tips in order to insure your trip is accident free.
One big threat can be lightening. While no one likes to go camping in the rain, it inevitably happens and in the summer usually lightening goes along with it. Lighting kills over 100 people every year and is actually quite a dangerous weather related phenomenon. Lightening can happen just up in the sky but when it strikes the ground, it usually goes to the tallest object - so if you are on top of a cliff or the tallest thing in a field you could get hit. However, even if you are not the tallest object you can still get struck by lightening.
The funny thing is that humans are conductive due to the amount of salt and fluids in their bodies. Combine that with being wet from the rain and you’ll look pretty attractive to a blot of lightening!
But the threat of injury isn’t just by being directly struck, lightening could strike a thee that might fall on you or you could be injured simply from being near a lightening strike due to the high voltage.
Another camping safety tip is to be careful when climbing and hiking. You don’t want to go rock climbing without the appropriate equipment and you don’t want to stand near the edge of a cliff especially if it is a windy day. Be careful of your hiking path as loose rocks or tree limbs could case a fall and a broken bone which can be problematic if you are way out in the woods.
Also, don’t forget that camping brings along with it a lot of cuts and scrapes and the chance of them getting infected can be quite high since you are outdoors so you want to be sure to have a first aid kit with disinfectant and bandages handy. Also, consider bringing tweezers for splinters as well as bug spray and sunscreen.
Avoid catching a cold by making sure you have handcleaner along. Probably the best prevention for colds, flu, etcetera is to keep your hands clean. Also bring along flu or cold medicine just in case you or a member of your party happens to develop symptoms while on your camping trip.
A lot of camping safety is common sense but you may not be used to thinking about some of these things if you have spent most of your time indoors. Take a little extra care to make sure your trip is a safe one.
